The Llandaff North Hornets got the season off to a flying start at the Llandaff RFC Mini Rugby Tournament on Sunday 7th September. The Hornets welcomed back some familiar faces from the under 7’s including Darragh Healy, Isaac Richards, Tom Woods, Freddie Blackmore, Sophie Southgate, Niall Moore, Ed Maguire, Fraser and Finlay Britton  and Will Greenaway-Parry. The team also greeted new players Abby-Rose and Cameron with open arms as both really impressed with their debut performances.

Game 1 – verses Llandaff

We started with a game against the old enemy, and what a game it was. The first half saw Tom score a hat trick of tries as well as putting himself around defensively. Ed also crossed the line after picking some fantastic running lines. Freddie showed really quality with his defensive play with some try saving tags; he also ran the length of the pitch with ball in hand to put Isaac safely over the line following some superb supportive play from him. Half time score stood at 5 tries to Llandaff’s 2.

The second half saw captain for the game, Sophie Southgate, showing off her running skills crossing the try line twice. Niall also score in the second half after supporting a blistering run from newcomer Cameron, who proved he will be a real asset for the team with his pace in future matches. Special mention also goes to Finlay, Fraser, Abby-Rose, Will and Darragh who all did an excellent job both with supporting play and in defence, which was clearly demonstrated in the end score Llandaff North 8 – Llandaff 3.

Game 2 – verses Rumney

After a prolonged break the Hornets took to the field again to face their second opponents Rumney, who proved to be tougher opposition. Captain for the game Tom continued his try scoring form crossing the line in the second half. Niall also got his name on the score board again and Isaac score twice in the first half. However, despite another sterling performance in defence Rumney proved the stronger team on this occasion with the final score standing at Llandaff North 4 – Rumney 7.

Game 3 – verses Clwb Rugbi

After re-grouping the Hornets decided they were going to end the tournament on a high. Fraser decided to get the team back on track scoring twice in the first half, equalling the score. With nothing between the two teams going into the second half captain for the game Freddie led from the front scoring a hat trick. Both Tom and Ed also crossed the line in the second half. The whole team continued to show their outstanding skills in defence as well which resulted in the final score Llandaff North 7 – Clwb rugby 4.

Player of the day was awarded to Fraser Britton.

Overall a great morning was had by all with parents and coaches all commenting on how impressed they were with the focus and determination showed by team.
