A delpleted North side travelled to Skewen on a mild autumn Sunday. Injury and unavailability meant North fielded a forward heavy side of 14.
Undaunted by the task at hand, North threw themselves into a highly physical fixture. But a well drilled Skewen side, and a one man deficit, was always going to be a tough ask.
Back rowers Ffion Evans, Jenny Hawkins and Becky Newton migrated to the back line for this game, with Newton fulfilling the dual role of full back and loose head prop.
Skewen crossed the whitewash after ten minutes of brutal defence by North. Not to be shut out of the game, North got on the scoreboard through the boot of number 10 Robyn Wilkins.
Morale wavered slightly in the middle of the first half and Skewen were able to cross three more times before the whistle.
North heads didn’t stay down for long. The intensity and commitment shown by the ladies throughout resulted in North having much of the possession and territory, especially in the second half.
Despite this Skewen exploited the overlap to claim two further tries in the second half.
The North set piece was strong throughout, with the driving line out being a particular strength for the North.
The grit and determination shown by the team eventually reaped rewards and North were rewarded with a solid team try, finished by centre Elin Huxtable and converted by Wilkins.
The final score was 30-10 but there are lots of positives to take from this game into next weeks home encounter against Barry.
