North Ladies win Creative Rugby’s Heart of Wales 7’s

piesThis weekend the North Ladies travelled to Llanidloes to take part in the Heart of Wales 7’s competition.

Due to some last minute drop-outs the tournament saw just the North Ladies and Caernarfon Ladies compete in a best-of-three competition.

With the sun shining it was a perfect day for some running rugby. Caernarfon’s first kick off was caught by speedster Caryl James, who made a break in space, crossing the line early putting North ahead. North continued with the pressure with Elin Huxtable, and Sarah Barrett  both crossing the whitewash, the final score was North ladies 31-5 Caernarfon Ladies.

The second game started very differently. Caernarfon ladies were aggressive from the kick off and were not going to go down without a fight. Displaying impressive ball handling skills and pace out on the wing, North’s defence was put to the test on several occasions. Superb counter rucking from Jenny Hawkins and Ffion Evans meant North managed to regain the ball once again for the pacey James to touch down under the posts again. Caernarfon kept their cool and once again asked many questions of the North defence. A turn over ball sent prop Nia Jones thundering off down the wing, brushing aside 3 Caernarfon players to cross the line. With further tries from Huxtable and Hawkins north won comfortably 24-0.

With North being ahead by 2 games it was decided by both teams to mix up the last game, all players put their names into a cup and teams were selected at random. This proved to be a highly exciting game with both teams playing off the cuff. It was a fantastic display of women’s rugby with both skill and physicality showing in abundance. Final score was 26-10 to the girls in the Caernarfon shirts.

North ladies would like to thank the Creative 7’s tournament organisers as well as Cardiff Sports Nutrition and Rugby Warfare for the prizes for the winners. Love the t-shirts!
