The Llandaff North U8 Hornets braved the unexpected change in the weather and set off to Porth on Sunday 5th October. Despite the rain and some initial difficulties finding the club house all the Hornets were in fine spirits and ready to do plenty of running.
Playing for the U8’s were Freddie Blackmore, Seren Lockwood, Owen Lockwood, Elliott Barry, Darragh Healy, William Greenaway-Parry, Fraser Britton and Niall Moore.
Game 1 – Captain for this game was Owen and he led the team with confidence. This exceptionally strong U8 team started with grit and determination with fantastic tries coming from Seren, Freddie, Niall and Fraser. Thanks yet again to a superb defensive effort with notable tagging contributions made by Owen, Fraser and Freddie we went into the half time break leading 4 tries to 1. It seemed like the whole team wanted to really stretch their legs in the second half with some great running shown by Elliott (who only got caught by the whistle once), Darragh and William, all of whom made valuable yards. Fraser also showed some powerful running. Freddie displayed some terrific support running which allowed him to cross the try line not once but twice in the second half. Seren also crossed the line for the second time this game seeing the end score stand at Hornets 7 – Porth 3.
Game 2 – Was a mixture of U7s and 8’s, all the Hornets that had travelled up to Porth got a run out. Continuing in top form U8 players Freddie and Fraser put us on the score board in the first half. Now we do all need to take a moment to revel in the glorious skill demonstrated by Fraser in what head coach Dominic Scoble described as a text book side-step (he also added that he hadn’t shown Fraser this in training so we are left assuming that it’s just natural talent). Let me paint you a picture, Fraser is tearing down the wing with just one man to beat (a Porth player who had already proved he had some considerable tagging skills) Fraser dummies to the left sending the Porth player in field then stepped quickly to his right giving him a clear run to the line where he successfully scored! A great tagging game was demonstrated by the Hornets again with Cameron again astounding the crowd with tags that looked almost impossible to reach. William also made a real impact on the tagging front. Going into half time with 2 tries each the Hornets came out determined to finish the last game in the same style as the two previous games. Freddie showed his skills again crossing the line for yet another try. Owen, whose tagging skills are second to none also added to the try count. Seren naturally scored yet again, but special mention for her try saving tag, all other Hornets had just got finger tips to the elusive tag, but in true Hornet spirit of not giving up Seren used her speed and crossed the width of the pitch to come and snatch the tag to prevent the try. All players performed really well and it was great to see a combined U7 & 8 effort. The game ended Hornets 5 – Porth 4.
Player of the day was named by the Porth coach as Seren Lockwood.
Big thank you to all the support that was shown by friends and family.
