LLandaff North U7’s v Rumney U7s 23.03.14

By Megan Martin

harryA sunny, but very windy, Sunday morning on the 23rd March 2014 saw Llandaff North U7’s take on Rumney U7’s at home. Our fearless nine took to the field with a grit and determination that saw all nine players through a whole two games, against two separate Rumney sides.

Captain for the day, Freddie Blackmore, led from the front scoring an impressive 3 tries in total. This was matched by some great running and supportive play by Fraser Britton who also scored 3 tries. On only his second appearance for the Llandaff North Hornets, Caleb Richards really showed his speed and his ability to side-step effectively crossing the try line twice. A contentious try was eventually awarded in the second half for the teams’ youngest player who had a fantastic run, side-stepping nearly every Rumney player only to fall slightly short of the try line. However all coaches involved can recognise talent when they see it and both sides agreed to award the try to Finlay Britton. Not wanting to be out done by his brother Isaac Richards, who found himself victim to the touch line on occasion, got a firm hold of the ball in the second game and showed skill and speed to cross the line for the equalising try on his debut performance.

The whole team took their defensive duties seriously as well, again team skipper Freddie setting an example with some top tagging. Great tagging efforts were also made by Sophie Southgate and Darragh Healy who both made a big impact across the pitch. Ed Maguire almost crossed the line on a couple of occasions and provided some great support to his team mates. William Greenaway-Parry also had some great runs, and although he is still resisting the coaches’ advice of carrying the ball in both hands, he was able to off-load to his team mates and keep the game flowing. William also lead the team in a end of match chant exclaiming that Llandaff North Hornets were indeed “ah ah ah ah staying alive” after two tough games!

All players showed great team spirit and fun was had by all. Player of the Day was awarded to Isaac Richards.

The Hornets would also like to wish Thomas Woods a speedy recovery with his foot! Take care Tom and get well soon.
