‘Saints and Sinners in an Unholy Contest’
Tom Jameson U12 manager

Now St. Peter’s from the ‘Pearly Gates’ over on the other side of town, they’ve always been a nice bunch and our relationship always sound. Back at base camp however we’d invited them back to our own little cauldron that is Hailey Park and a spicy little do it was.

Miserable weather was cast down from up above and both sides tossed about the ball like a bar of soap at bath time. Our guests opened the scoring only for our own saintly Outside Half, the Archangel Gabriel Bertelli himself to jink under the posts to level.

We traded blows, at this stage in the legal sense and although we went behind again, Robert Dickinson went over to finish a fine left wing move for his second try in 2 weeks. At 10-17 down however things turned sour. Words spoken, accusations made, both sides to blame in a bitter tussle.

The Saints of St. Peter not so holy after all, the boys from ‘the North’ suitably dressed in sinners black. We lost Morgan to an injury, and Dylan Booth to his brooding temper. Not sent off you understand, Dylan had had a fine game again but with anger to manage he was ‘tactically withdrawn’.

The conditions were ‘Hell like’, the sins various, ours mainly those of poor reaction to decisions given; sadly all lessons to be learnt. With our 2 biggest forwards off either injured or cooling off, playing 14 against a rampaging St.Peter’s was no way to survive and we conceded 2 late scores despite stout defensive tackling, from Harri, Rowan, Robert and both Ben’s, Yarwood and Hembury.

Lesson learnt we hope, in discipline and game management. A line in the sand is hopefully drawn.
