We all knew it would be a tough test for the North Ladies at Hailey Park on Sunday as the squad fronted up to form club Swansea.
The last time the two teams met it had been a very one sided affair with the North failing to register any points and the Swansea Ladies putting up a double digit try count.
This year hopes were high, with a new look North side taking on the league, and the first half didn’t disappoint.
It was a furious encounter from the off, physical and fast paced. Swansea got the first points on the board through an Alec’s Donovan unconverted try, 5-0 to the visitors.
The North Ladies faced incredible pressure in the scrum from a bigger more experienced pack but held their nerve to keep play moving, allowing centre Elin Huxtable to cross for the equaliser.
Both sides were fighting for absolutely everything but it was North who ended the half on a high, a Jo Jones break away had the home side leading 10-5 at the break.
The second half began with the same intensity as the first and both sides were looking for any cracks in the opposition defends.
About 20mins into the half Swansea had the North pinned in the corner on their 5 metre line. With scrum having continued to be a struggle the North pack threw everything they had at Swansea and began to move their solid scrum backwards. The referee had spotted an infringement somewhere and after the scrum was reset once decided to award a penalty try.
This proved to be a turning point in the game and three Swansea tries in quick succession put the win just out of reach for the North.
Never ones to give up though, it was North who had the last say on the score board with substitute scrum half Claudia Meyrick scoring a try, converted by full back Amberley Ruck.
Final score 17-31 to Swansea. The North have a weekend off now to prepare for the next big challenge away at league leaders Caernarfon.
