North ladies start season off with home win
Sunday saw the North ladies welcome Gwernyfed to Hailey Park for the Greens first Premiership fixture following promotion from Division 1.
North have recruited well over the summer and the season opener saw them field a team of exciting young players balanced with solid experience. With a new coaching structure in place, this was a great opportunity for the players to stake a claim for shirts going forward.
After a few days of torrential rain the sun was thankfully out and the conditions were good for some running rugby. Both teams were eager to get the season underway with a win.
North kicked off and from the first catch Gwernyfed made their intentions clear. The away team carried hard and for the first 10 minutes tested the home team’s defense. The North ladies solid defense weathered the storm and, when some impressive handling from the backs released center Elin Huxtable, took an early lead. Huxtable’s chip and chase and a good show of pace taking the score to 5-0 to the home team.
The score settled the North and from the kick off It was all North until the half-time whistle. A superb gather from Huxtable from kick-off saw her run straight through the defensive line, the Gwernyfed defense scrambled back but some great support play by flanker Jenni Scoble saw her gather the ball and cross the white wash for her first try. 12-0 to the home side.
The North Ladies continued to put the pressure on the visitors and with some efficient rucking from the North forwards, the backs were able to spread the ball wide for their third try, Huxtable again getting the touch down. Youngster Claudia Meyrick added the extras making it 19-0 to the home side.
This score was followed by some slippery running from new fly half Millie Williams, who cut through the defense to power over the line making it 26 – 0.
North ladies were on a roll but a series of high tackles from the visiting side left the ref with no alternative but to give Gwernyfed Prop Rosie Snape 10 minutes in the bin.
North continued to spread the ball wide and after a few penetrating runs down the wing Lora Roberts crossed the white wash for the home side’s 5th try bringing the score to 31- 0.
Not content, North continued to find gaps in Gwernyfed’s defense, this time full back Rhian Gower breaking away and being brought down short of the line but once again the support play of the North back line allowed Huxtable to cross for her 4th try bringing the score at half time to 36-0.
Gwernyfed were a different team from the restart, running hard, breaking tackles and threatening the North line. The Snape sisters Meg and Lily, asked questions of the home side’s defense time and time again. Gwernyfed camped on the North 5 metre line with Delyth Thomas and Captain Rosie Jones being held up on the try line.
The North defense was relentless, holding strong and allowing replacement fly half Jo Jones to bring the home side back into play again, Huxtable crossing again for the final try of the game. Once again Meyrick added the extras with a well struck kick from the try line to bring the final score to 43-0.
Next week the #northfamily head west to Whitland before a weekend off.
