North ladies made the 4 hour Journey to Caernarfon looking to make up for the heavy defeat they faced last time they visited.
North kicked off with the intention of returning to their winning form of previous weeks and in the first half that certainly looked likely. Early on Caernarfon’s game plan seemed to be to use the strength of their forwards and their good offload in contact. However, the North ladies were able to starve the Cofis of possession and spread the ball wide. Good handling skills from the back line often releasing winger Kira Philpott to gain ground for the visitors.
North were dealt a blow after after 20 minutes when fly half Millie Williams came off with an injury forcing a reshuffle in the back line. Nevertheless the North ladies continued to have all the possession. Second row pairing, Louise Cox and Ffion Evans, worked hard in the ruck area to slow down what little ball Caernarfon had.
A further set-back for the North happened at the 30-minute mark when Centre Molly Philpott went off with a knee injury. With their only replacement used, North ladies were down to 14 players but continued to push forward. It wasn’t long until No 8 Morfudd Ifans, having a hugely physical game, crashed over the line making it 0-5 to North.
The dominant North pack maintained a solid scrum to set a good platform for the backs to work from. With half time approaching, a North back line attack and a well-timed pop from Centre Emily Davies released Full back Rhian Gower down the wing. Drawing the last defender, she released winger Kira Philpott who scored in the corner on the stroke of half time. 0-10 to north
The second half saw Caernarfon continue to make ground through their forwards, now running downhill. Despite being a player down, it too a full 20 minutes into the second half before Caernarfon made the most of the overlap and full back Beth Davies broke through to score 10-7 to North.
North ladies worked hard to keep Caernarfon out but good phases of play and a penalty on the on the North 5 metre line allowed Teleri Davies to crash over for the home sides 2nd try 12-10 to the home side.
Caernarfon had the luxury of fresh legs in the last stages of the game and with only 3 minutes left on the clock there was still everything left to play for. Both teams threw everything they had at each other but it was the home side who got the last word as full back Beth Davies made a break on the wing and released Caernarfon fly half who crossed the line on the 80 minute mark. Final score Caernarfon 19 – 10 Llandaff North
