‘Manic Preaching on the streets of Blackwood’

I think we’re getting through! Slowly but surely after a sleepy summer pre-season and the slowest of starts our intense Friday session was re-paid by the boys’ best performance yet as U12’s. Old friendships from our U10 days were re-united in the Blackwood autumn sun.

Indeed more reminiscent of a summers day it was pleasantly firm under foot. As combative around the breakdown as we could have wanted after last weeks shy and timid second half showing, and again dominant in the scrum we took the game to our hosts. We conceded first after trading attacks blow for blow but two replies took us to a 10-7 half time lead. Our backs ran straight and we offloaded intelligently allowing breaks by Ben Hembury and Archie Baxter to be finished smartly by Centre David Burnell-Brown and Wing Robert Dickinson.

The forwards gave us a platform, Dylan Booth again was oustanding in every aspect, and newly nominated pack leader Dylan Bignall led by example. We occasionally missed a trick and conceded too many penalties. Blackwood picked and drove and scored twice in the second half to give themselves the lead. We remained in the game however with Ben Yarwood playing his best game so far this season from Centre and with Ben Hembury making 2 try saving tackles from Full Back.

We knew Blackwood, we knew how they’d come at us and true enough they came straight up the middle. Last week’s second half had been an unmitigated capitulation yet this week’s so inspiring. A fantastic effort to hang on was just called short when needing a 7 point score to level we had no time to take our penalty inspired line-out.

Day lost, but hearts won, all our Manic Friday night Preaching had worked and it left a
tone ringing on the Streets of Blackwood! We now look forward to January when we will renew our friendship with a return game at Hailey Park and hopefully gain our just revenge.
